OUR COMPROMISE WITH THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
The environment is one of the main issues for the Santa Eduviges
Group. Since a few years ago we have been working with long term
strategies that help conserve the soils, our most precious natural
resource. This is possible through correction to diminish the acidity
of the volcanic soils and make available mineral elements that otherwise
couldn¹t be absorbed by the coffee plant.
The right quantity of organic material in the soil is mantained,
through crops, through the covering of the soils and the inclusion
of coffee BROZA that is treated with californian worms and GALLINAZA,
which enrich the microbial population, which brake down the soil
minerals for better assimilation of the plant. Likewise through
the use of leguminous shade plants, like araquis in areas where
the sun light exceeds daily an average of five hours, we maintain
optimal temperature levels for the fruit growth, in a slow way in
order to avoid fast metabolic processes that diminish the quality
of the final taste.
In higher altitudes it is the clouds that bring natural shade, and
the plantation is completely exposed to sunlight.
Only high quality coffees that are easily adapted to the climatic
conditions of the area are used, which come from certified SAN POL
seeds, that come from our own farms. Our farms consist of 20 year
old plants, and every year a 5% is renewed, and a 12.5% is pruned.
This assures always a young TISSUE that responds well to the pruning,
absorb the fertilizers in a better way, tolerate better the plague
and disease attacks, which assure that the cropps don¹t vary
their output more than a 10% every year.
